What about a murder-mystery in a box? There are some excellent sources online, in addition to role-playing kinds of games that you can buy at Target or whatever. When I was looking for "living CLUE games" a few years ago, I found these sites:

https://mastersofmystery.com/collect...-mystery-games
I attended a murder-mystery dinner theatre thing when I was in high school (it was one of our scheduled activities during one of our performance tours) and thought it was a lot of fun, even though I am TERRIBLE at solving puzzle games like this.

Ditto but they come up with playing that all on their own. It’s just a spontaneous game for them. I think that’s where I’m going with my replies- the kids have ideas in their arsenals.

That's awesome and that works for your kid. But not all kids are the same. As it turns out, I spoke to my 18 yo last night and he loved the idea posted here of a murder mystery. He thinks it will be a great activity for his friends to work on together. He's going to help me set it up.
Thanks for the fun ideas!

Glad they figured it out.
Mine might not have come up with Mafia either but someone in the friend group would have.
