Default Getting covid between vaccine doses?

DS2 (9) was supposed to get his second covid vaccine this past Thursday but instead actually tested positive for covid on Tuesday. (Mostly asymptomatic besides maybe a little more sleepy than usual but that could also be due to being stuck out of school forever now..) We would have never tested him besides DD getting sick and tested positive first. DS1 and DS3 have remained negative (saliva PCR's on Tues and Fri) and I strongly suspect they have either already had it and we missed catching it on a test or the weird "stomach bug" virus they both had a couple weeks ago (which DS2 did not end up with, weirdly) was actually covid. (I did home test them both once and it was negative and didn't think to retest since GI issues were their only issue. I assumed they had a stomach virus.) In any case, now I have no idea when to get their second dose. Our ped is great but is pretty pushy pro-vaccine and I don't think I'm comfortable getting the second dose for them anytime soon- especially as they are all boys. I was just wondering if anyone had this with their 12-15s and what the advice was on the second dose? (Or adults for that matter? Although one of my nurse coworkers had that happen and was told to get her second vaccine as normal and did that, back in January.) Obviously watching how this new variant plays out may change my thoughts as well..
    Thank you!

I know the CDC says no need to wait, but I’d probably wait at least several weeks. I was iffy about getting my 12 yr old vaxed, but it’s required for school. She said spread the doses out by 5 or 6 weeks. We waited 5 weeks. My son still got a 102 fever that lasted for 4 days. I had a a really hard time with the second dose (high fevers, heart palpitations, severe vertigo) all lasting over a week. I will not get a booster, and I’m so nervous to get my 9 yr old vaxed.

Well, honestly, I am waiting 90 days after DS3 had covid to get his vaccines. Not the same situation at all because he didn’t have a vax before covid. I really wish they’d get their act together on the nuances of situations.

Our friends DD tested positive shortly after getting her first vax (exposed two days after first vax). She actually received her second vax on time because she was out of quarantine and her doctor felt that was fine.

I would at the very least get the two who have not tested positive vaccinated on time (or as soon as you can if they are quarantined). I think I would defer to my doctor on the one that tested positive. I would be ok waiting for him since he would have some antibodies I think. So far, they have not seen the heart issues in the younger age group that I've heard of, and at this point they were seeing them with the 12-15 year olds. So that's good news. I don't think they're anticipating it because the dose is lower and this age group is not as prone to heart inflammation like the older boys. Not saying it can't happen, but I think it's probably less likely and would vaccinate as long as the doctor thought it was fine.

The myocarditis risk was highest in males aged 18-29 and not really any higher in the 12-15 year old group I don't think and even less (or unseen) in those under 12 (due to the lower dose). Knowing that I'd probably do 2nd dose on time or just wait 90 days.

I don't think we really know the best interval in this situation since there hasn't been enough time for longer term research. Hopefully we will get answers to these more specific situations as time goes on. Based on reinfection data, I'd likely vaccinate sometime within 90 days of infection and would personally feel comfortable with sooner rather than later.

My DS just had Covid between shots. He tested positive a few days after a school exposure and had very few, if any, symptoms. The rest of us tested negative at the same time and then he totally isolated in the basement and we all stayed negative when we tested at 3 and 5 days later.

His 2nd shot was already scheduled and was the day after he ended isolation. After talking to our pediatrician and a friend who is a peds ID dr (plus my DH is a peds specialist) we decided to go ahead with the 2nd shot due to rising #s in the area, the new variant and the fact that he would still get quarantined if he was a close contact and not vaccinated. He did totally fine with the 2nd shot - zero side effects besides a semi-sore arm. He went to school and sports practice the next day with no issues.

ETA: All 3 of the peds drs I mentioned above also stressed that the myocarditis issue is a much bigger risk with Covid infections than with the vaccine. They all say that the myocarditis from Covid infections have been much more significant, requiring more treatment and followup/long term care than any cases they have seen with the vaccine.

I would probably wait 14 days post positive test or symptoms for all the boys. However, a friend whose son had Covid 2 days before his initial appointment was told to bring both of his kids in once they had completed their quarantine for shots. They've both been fine since getting the shot, and at least one of them was high risk.
