    Default Type 2 diabetes

    So I think I'm about to get a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, pending labwork this week. I had a urine sample taken last week and it was positive for glucose and yeast. I've been more thirsty than usual, had intermittent blurry vision, and been tired. In addition, the last bloodwork I had at my last check-up my A1C was 6. Everyone on my mom's side of the family has it, so there's a huge genetic component to it. I turned 45 in October.

    And my situation is more complicated because I just finished a year of treatment for binge eating disorder. I think yo-yo dieting, BED, and genetics have really played the biggest role in this. That said, I feel guilt and shame--because society looks at Type 2 diabetics as lazy and uncaring about their health.

    Any tips? BTDT? Questions I should ask? What I should expect next?

    no advice, just hugs. Be kind to yourself and try not to blame yourself. I'm in healthcare and I've never looked at a patient and blamed them for their diabetes. I am sorry you are going through this
    If you do get a positive diagnosis, you most likely will be directed to a specialist who will help you figure out a diet, lifestyle changes etc

    Default Type 2 diabetes

    DH just got a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes before Christmas. He has family history too. He saw an endocrinologist and now has a blood sugar monitor on his upper arm that is linked to app on his phone. Things we’ve done:

    * We’ve overhauled our eating to low carb options. So protein and vegetables. He’s eating a small side salad before dinner. Subbed quinoa or cauliflower rice for rice, and sweet potatoes for potatoes. Found a lower carb bread and he only eats one piece. I cut up vegetables and have in a container for easy access with hummus or other dip. He also has high cholesterol and high blood pressure so factoring that in too with some eggs and some egg white scrambles. I bought an air fryer for vegetables

    * exercise 10 mins after every meal. DH found that it automatically drops his blood sugar. So yesterday after brunch out we had to go to Home Depot so made sure he did brisk walking around the store. At home, he gets on rower, does short weights session or we’ll walk once weather is nicer.

    * incorporate vinegar, it’s supposed to help blood sugar levels. So DH puts it on salad dressing or he mixes a tablespoon with iced tea

    I’m also helping DH. I’m eating similar things and I feel better for it. I substitute for DS so he’s still eating carbs

    First, congratulations on getting the help you need for the eating disorder. They are so misunderstood and people think only people who very thin have them. So much of current eating fads (IF, Clean eating, super low carb) are mostly dressed up eating disorders. The vast majority of DM II is very well managed with a very simple Mediterranean diet with a few tweaks. I’m doesn’t have to be complicated or very restrictive. The tricky thing for you is to watch your diet and make changes without triggering you ED. If I were you I would look for a nutritionist that has experience with eating disorders. A nutritionist that just concentrated on new diabetic diagnosis is going to focus on some things you probably don’t need and might not be good for your recovery. I would also be careful broadcasting it asking for food advice on diabetes from just anyone. First off, there’s a lot of bad advice. Second, you are correct people are unfairly judgmental. I don’t think you need to be embarrassed. I just don’t think you need everyone to be in your business since it could cause emotional distress for you.

    Oh diabetes can be rough emotionally. As a culture we certainly don't do anything to help that. My DS1 has type 1 diabetes and there is just so much widespread misinformation about BOTH types and none of that kind of messaging is helpful in the slightest. As someone who is here in the trenches, I recommend getting hooked up with the best kinds of support you can. I love the dietician in DS1's endo's office. She's super positive and informed. We also have access to a social worker to help us with any mental health issues that arise from living with a chronic disease. It can be relentless but there are resources available and good information out there. The best prognoses I've seen with diabetes come when the patient is engaged with their community and their care team. I've even seen net positive outcomes for families who make the effort. Meaning, families that have better attitudes towards food than the general public and who are very clued in on their own personal mental health. It is that whole silver lining thing. Whenever someone in my community is diagnosed we recognize that it is being admitted to a club that nobody wanted to join, but that has all kinds of insider benefits once you're there. Good luck!     I got my labs back today, which confirmed my suspicions. Thank you ladies for your thoughtful replies, it really means a lot. I've done a lot of reading over the past week and talked to my mom to see what has worked/not worked for her. I have a call with my primary care physician later this afternoon. Thankfully, my husband was supportive and didn't go into "problem-solving" mode (he's an engineer so he's very apt to do that) and he also wasn't critical. I've reached out to a dietician I know who is a huge proponent of intuitive eating and HAES, so that will be helpful in not triggering a relapse in my BED (binge eating disorder). I'm ready to just get moving on this and take control.

    My husband was just diagnosed type 2 also. He also has a family history. He enjoys eating lower carb so he doesn't have to track anything, which works for him. He was just put on metformin, and feels a lot better already. I'm glad you are putting a support system in place. So important!
