Covid and vacation

Not OP, but an update. My extended family of 10 flew to Florida and back 2 weeks ago. We wore KF94/KN95 masks on the plane and in the airport, but took them off for eating and drinking. The teens behind us on the return were coughing up a lung. We didn't wear masks anywhere else in FL, but didn't do a ton of other indoor activities. We grocery shopped, went to some souvenir shops, and went to 2 indoor restaurants. Otherwise we were pretty much at the pool/beach the whole time.

Still, no one got COVID. WTH!

OP, how did your trip go?

We’ve been back almost a week now from Europe and all negative so far (tested day we returned and 5 days later). Only time I wore a mask was when required on Italian trains and buses. Didn’t wear one on any planes.
At this point, if I come up + I could have easily gotten it in Europe or from our friend. We went to a party the day after we got back and spent tons of time with the host indoors, no masks. He tested + the next day.

We went on a cruise last week to the Bahamas. Got back on Friday and all three tested positive on Saturday. The positive lines lit up for all three within two or three minutes. We were traveling in a group of 23, and only one other person has said she tested positive.

DH woke up that Thursday (our last full day on the ship) with a bad headache and sinus pressure. He attributed it to spending the previous night in the smoky casino as we aren't around smoke at all usually. I gave him medicine, and he rallied and came back out Thursday night. On the 10-hour drive home Friday, he started coughing a little and then DS started complaining of a stuffy nose. We all have had super mild cases. DS' congestion cleared up after a day or two, and I'm on antivirals. DH just has a lingering cough.

Not the OP, but I also posted earlier about never having COVID and feeling like a ticking time bomb before a college tour trip with DS. We flew on a Saturday, drove to a second city and a third city, flew to a fourth city and then flew home the following Saturday. Did college tours (mostly outside) and ate inside through out the week (way too hot to dine outside). I made DS mask on the 1st and second set of flights but not the final flights home.(Really didn’t want to get sick away from home in a hotel room with DS.) But we did take them off to eat and drink. We’ve been home almost 2 weeks and no COVID.

For various we decided not to “go away” this summer and just rent a house within driving distance near the beach. SO glad we did. I realize many people were itching to travel this winter and made plans. I could make plans for various reasons until later spring and the prices were skyrocketing. I thought, oh WAY too many people are traveling, not this summer. Air travel is a mess. The rate of COVID was higher in May of 22 than May if 21. Word from on the ground is the new BA5 variant is insanely contagious. As it appears there are legitimate cases of people getting it outside or inside while masked. I switched to a N95 mask when indoors a few months ago and glad I did. Hospitalization and deaths aren’t climbing at the same rate as previous waves, but several experts I follow say that it’s because so many people have been infected within the last few months that is helping. There are people getting reinfected after being positive for Covid less that a month before, that shows a pretty strong ability of the variant to outwit the immune system. We never had it in our family and it’s been a while since we have had the vaccine. Now might be the time I get my second booster. Who knows if it will help. I would say it’s endemic and don’t worry, but with the number of people getting infected 2, 3 or 4 times and the evidence that the more often you are infected the more likely you are to develop long term complications…..
Let’s just saying I’m not making any big plans right now.

Yeah, the reinfection thing is really frustrating. I was hoping we would now be able to get through the summer but who knows. I'm not surprised, though. DS, 12, got his booster at the beginning of June and should have have been in peak immunity, but yet his test lit up like a Christmas tree like ours did. I understand that the vaccines don't target the variants, but it's still frustrating. At least he just had a day or two of congestion.

Our only other big plans are a few days at the beach before school starts next month.

regarding second booster, I was just on a trip with 7 college friends (a cruise-eek). The 5 50 year olds had all gotten the second booster sometime in the late spring. Three of us are 49 and had not yet gotten the second booster-all 3 of the 49 year olds came home with covid. Obviously pure anecdote but still pretty interesting. Fortunately none of us were very sick and all seem fine now. My dh went out and got his second booster as soon as I got home.

How many of the boostered 50 year olds got COVID?

I’m 48, but got the second booster in March because I was heading to Germany who was having their worst wave and hanging out with Brits there who were having a wave. Was trying what I could to avoid getting stuck there with COVID. I made it through that trip, a family Disney trip a week after my return and the 3 months since. I don’t know if that helped and I don’t know how much longer it will really help, but in my study of 1, the booster seemed to work. In my state you don’t have to prove eligibility so I just made an appointment and showed up despite that I wasn’t technically eligible.

DH and I just went to Jamaica with 2 friends. Our Southwest flight down was booked to capacity and the return flight was also pretty full. We did not mask because at this point we were just ready for a normal escape! Only a handful of passengers and staff on the plane and in airport wore masks. At the resort most restaurants were open air and activities were outside. Thankfully we all returned and no sickness. My family was so super careful the first 2 years with at least the girls and I masking everywhere and limited events. But after the girls and I still caught it, we have moved on. I’m still not ready for super crowded places like Disney or a big concert, but we are returning to a semi normal lifestyle now. We are renting a condo at the DE shore at the end of the month, but most activities will be outdoors. If this new wave continues to worsen I am curious to see how the school year starts out. People here are very anti mask now (though my girls don’t mind wearing them if their friends are) and all normal school activities resumed last year with hardly any contact tracing, etc. I am guessing there will be boosters Targeting the new strains in the fall? If so, the girls and I will get them, not sure about DH.

None. Only those of us without the second booster got it. I actually considered trying to get one before I left, but didn't.
