There definitely will be no sitting by the lake in Madison in February! (and April may be icky too). Madison has one of the best farmers markets that I have ever seen, so if UW is a consideration after her first visit, you must visit in the summer as the market is huge! Wisconsin and Michigan are gorgeous in the summer.

February is the worst in the Midwest! So bitterly cold. Aim for April.

So over $68k a year for out of state students typically, with tuition increases of 3-5% every year. University of Wisconsin awarded merit scholarships to less than 5 out of state students this year, which is typical.

    Yes to this!
Make sure you’ve read up on OOS acceptance rates and total costs of attendance (COA).

Oh my gosh! I just looked at OOS acceptance because this is DS's plan (he's only in 8th grade, obviously things can/will change but I wanted to be prepared) and was shocked at the OOS acceptance rates. I knew it was competitive but not that competitive. We live only 2 hours from Ann Arbor, DS's specialists are at there, and it's one of the top schools for his current major of interest. Guess I'd better be reading up on how to distinguish himself from others during the application process in case he decided he wants to apply here still when the time comes. DH always jokes we should just move to Ann Arbor for HS so he's consider in state. I'm not telling him it would potentially make DS's life easier to get admitted because he'd have a house bought in no time.

I guess I need to start reading up on all of this college stuff now. I thought I had a few years.

Way OT but why not move to Ann Arbor? Your part of OH hasn’t seemed to endear itself to you; Ann Arbor could be a very welcome change of environment!

Where are you finding OOS acceptance rates? Is there a good source? DS has an OOS public school on his list with 50%ish acceptance rate but I can’t find how that breaks down for OOS. Trying to make sure it’s the target school we think it is. I know it’s got to be lower for OOS but trying to understand how much lower.

Agree, one of my best friends lived in Saline (basically AA) and her kids both went to Saline HS (very good school). College wise their son went to Michigan State (but he got a full ride for football). They loved the area, and everytime we visited I thought it was a place I'd love to live in.

You're not wrong! I don't love it here, but at the same time I don't hate it and I'm not miserable. I'll also admit I was looking at houses last night just to see what was available. I'm not opposed to the idea in general, but it seems so frivolous to move just because we want in state tuition for a college that DS may decide in 4 years isn't what he really wants. Saline is very nice. We actually know a couple families that moved there and seem to really like it.

I really love the Ann Arbor area. If you already have to go up there for specialists, I'd really be drawn to the move!
