Default Shoes - kids vs men's sizing question

DS2 (9 yo) is wearing 7Y - his next pair of shoes will be out of kids sizing. I know that the men's sizes are theoretically the same, i.e., he'll probably need a 7.5 or 8 men's this winter, but how do the widths work? If men's standard width is D and women's is B, how does the kids standard width compare?

I don't remember what we did for DS1 at the same stage, but I remember it was awkward and didn't last too long (at 13 yo he wears men's 13 or 14). I have both boys in Nikes now because they tend to run narrow which is what they both seem to need.

Men's standard width is D, and I think kids' is roughly a B because we have always had to get DD wide-width shoes (she's like me - needs a "D" width.)

Thanks! This is what I suspected. I'll probably need to take DS2 shopping where he can try stuff on, but I may need to scope out some gender neutral styles of women's boots and sneakers.
