    Default NCAA and SAT requirements?

Ds is high school class of 2024. We had all but decided he was not going to take the SAT. There are schools he would be happy to go to that do not require it and also do not require it for scholarships. We knew there are some schools/scholarships he would not be eligible for, but felt he could live with that and it would allow him to focus on other things. He had taken the PSATs last year with no prep and scored about a 1050 (not exact). Well, last week he comes home and, for reasons I am unclear about, was thinking about taking the SATs. I think its a lot of "it can't hurt, so why not" thinking. I told him if he wanted, he certainly could, but he should at least work on Khan Academy, etc...well, I happened to come across something on the internet stating that the NCAA continues to waive SAT requirement for the class of 2023 and that there is movement to waive it past then, but its still unknown. Okay, I did not know about this. Ds is an athlete (we are behind on that side of things, but he may have a chance to be on a team in college and wants to pursue it). I google, but its hard to find the most up-to-date, accurate info. Is it true that the NCAA may require SATs for the class of 2024? Also, from what I read, they never required high scores, just scores, correct?

Finally, I have read the past posts/threads on SAT prep, but if anyone has anything to add about how to fit this into a very busy student athlete's life, please post! Thanks!

NCAA will vote on permanent removal of the standardized test requirement in January 2023, so your DS will have time to make a decision about taking the SAT after that. https://www.ncaa.org/news/2022/2/16/...s-advance.aspx

Sorry, I just edited to remove the "not".

If your DS hasn't already registered with the NCAA he might want to do so, https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/

I highly highly recommend this book! It's a step by step guide to the athletic recruitment process. She also has a very active FB group that I would join.

I am on that group and have the book. Ds has read it as well. He probably won’t be as proactive as the book recommends, and I am leaving that to him. He is a very motivated kid, but not quite ready as far as initiating contact with coaches, etc. probably by the Spring, which I know is relatively late in the game, but that’s okay.

Dd has a lot of friends that are D1 and D3 athletic commits (class of 2023 — current seniors). Most of them were required to meet a minimum SAT/ACT score as part of their pre read, even though their schools were test optional. So even if the NCAA is not requiring SAT scores from recruited athletes, some schools are.

    Good to know.

Also, he is already signed up with the NCAA. I told him to do it, and he did. He just reminded me of that which, apparently I forgot!

Thank you for this recommendation. I’ve got a hopeful college athlete and I know nothing about the recruiting process. This looks like a good resource.

Never argue with an idiot. He'll bring you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
