Default What calculator for high school

DD is starting high school this coming fall and I was wondering what the calculator should we purchase for her? She has a small simple calculator which is working for her right now. I heard couple of kids in my neighborhood using TI Nspire..but I remember a lot using TI83/84 from a long time ago. Does it matter which one she has. Just trying to be prepared and purchase it during a sale before school starts..

I would wait until school starts to see if they require certain models. Our HS math classes require TI83/84.

You could call the school, but yes, some require a specific one.

Our school goes from the TI-30 (a few different models available) for algebra 1 and geometry to TI-84 (83 also allowed but I get the impression it’s more of a “if you must”.) I wouldn’t buy anything until you know what is recommended. Also, if you have a network not everyone is into math and wants to keep their calculator once a class is done.

Wait and see. Mine didn't need one. They were either provided by the school or they could use their phone or computer.

When you do find out, look on your local Nextdoor- I posted a "looking to buy" as the one we needed TI84 was about a hundred dollars- at least 5 people had one, some were not even asking anything for it, others 15-20.00. As it's local it's likely they all went to the same high school and they used the same one.

Default What calculator for high school

So far dd1 hasn’t needed one. She has just used this TI calculator that we got her in 7th grade.

Dd1 is going into AP Stats. as a senior and has taken pre calc. (she can’t take AP Calc. because she didn’t take honors pre calc.).

Depending on what math or science class she is in, I would wait. The teacher likely has a preference and will let you know if it’s needed.

Once you find out which one, watch the sales. I bought ds1’s three years ago after reading about a markdown at Staples or similar. These sales start in July.

Also, do yourself a favor and the second you buy your device buy a second charger. Number one will be lost and you won’t have to drive to your friend’s house at midnight the night before the sophomore PSAT.
