I just asked because I've heard others call it that and I've never heard a basketball hoop called a goal, I thought maybe it was a regional term. I knew what she meant, but my neighbor from South Carolina called them that too.

I bet it's a southern thing. I think I've heard this all my life.

I’ve only heard basketball hoop, not goal.

Yep, I've never heard of a basketball goal until this thread!

I've heard both. When you shoot the ball and score, it is a basketball goal.

So, you score goals in hockey/soccer but never ever have I heard someone say when a basketball goes through the net referred to as a goal- they well say "scored a basket" or "a three pointer" or other reference to the shot, but never a goal. I have spent an insane amount of my life watching sports, likely thousands of hockey games IRL and on TV, and over the years so many college basketball games as well as my kids basketball games and never once have I heard it referred to as a goal. Interesting.

Yep, this is the reason the term "goal tending" is a basketball violation.

Funny the turn this thread took! I just asked DH as he loves basketball. He says that baskets scored during game play are called "field goals" as compared to free throws. And yes, goal tending is a basketball violation.

But, neither of us has never heard the term "basketball goal" or called the basket/net/hoop a goal. DH grew up in upstate NY, I grew up in NJ, and we live in New England now.

Same! I have heard of goaltending so of course it makes sense, but I've never heard anyone say it.

Regional differences are so fascinating. I've lived in CT, Boston area and Southern California, so not just one area. We're all about soccer "goals" in our house!
