Default Change in financial circumstances and FAFSA

My husband was laid off last (2023) May with a generous severance. He has been unemployed since then but recently took a position that pays much, much, much, much less than what he was making before. My daughter just started her junior year in College where we were paying full freight. Of course our FAFSA for this year, based on last year, looked pretty rosy. Is there any chance the College would consider our change in circumstances? Or are we just out of luck?

It does not hurt to put in a change of circumstances form/appeal (called different things by different colleges) in to the school. I think different schools would handle this differently where some would say you had the past income and they will not be adjusting anything, while others might adjust to your new income. Basically, I would certainly try in your case.

Most schools try to work with students who have a change in circumstances, especially if they are a good student. I would definitely try.

It won?t hurt to put in a change of circumstances, and see what they say.

We are in the same position and I ran the FAFSA with just my income to see if it made a difference, it didn?t. DS still didn?t qualify for financial aid. It?s a big state school with little merit aid too

Thanks. We found a "calculator" on the schools website that, broad strokes, tells you if they would reconsider. So we are emailing financial aid to see what they say.
