In our experience, the psychiatrist diagnoses and prescribes meds. A psychologist could probably also diagnose. I found most (pediatric at least) counselors/therapists did not have much experience with hallucinations and I would not feel comfortable with them diagnosing more serious mental health problems.

I?m not a professional, but it doesn?t seem too likely to me that the voice was the result of his friends suggestions. If the meds were the problem and they are out of his system and he?s not hearing it anymore, I could see backing off of any claims as he tries to make sense of a scary experience. Either way, it sounds like something serious was going on since he came to you with this concern and was clearly upset about it, in the moment. Hopefully the psychiatrist can help you get it sorted out at your appointment tomorrow.

Ok. So the psychiatrist is the better one to deal with issues like voices? The therapist who doesn't think he is hearing voices works primarily with adults, but again, I want to make sure I take this seriously. Unfortunately the appointment we have tomorrow is for the psychiatrists who DO NOT deal with anything beyond ADHD. According to my research (calling the departments and working through the phone tree) to see another psychiatrist I need to first see an in-network psychologist and get referred but all the psychologists are on strike. It is like beyond frustrating! I'm going to see if the psychiatrist will just let us move to another psychiatrist and maybe skip the psychologist in between? (I'm fine with seeing a psychologist again...strike!!)

Also, I forgot to mention that I have left messages for two out of network therapists referred by my therapist and neither one has called me back.
