Pretty sure we?ve decided on NYC. Now to find a hotel that doesn?t cost an arm and a leg in an area that?s close to things we can walk too but not right in the hustle and bustle of everything. DD2 has anxiety and the unknown about a NYC trip has her a little nervous but something she wants to do-step out of her comfort zone. So can anyone recommend places that are in a safe area, less expensive, and close to stores, restaurants, and some sightseeing places? She wants to stay in NYC, not NJ. We are planning on going 2nd or 3rd week in June. Thanks

We do NYC a lot. Favorite things:
Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty tour
J.P Morgan Library (free one night a week- check ahead)
    NY Public library
Grant national park by Columbia/ barnard
    Hamilton Grange National Monument
    Strand bookstore new NYU
    Met
    Moma
    Natural History Museum
    Cloisters
    Tenement museum
    Bronx zoo
Whatever tickets to Broadway I can buy that day on sale
    Any ballet company
    High line
    south street seaport museum
    Gullivers gate museum
Lots of good ethnic food on the upper west side- pick a country and find so many restaurants. We love Ethiopian, jewish deli, pulled noodles, Nepalese, Moroccan
We mostly stay in Murray Hill near the UN (not as touristy, more residential, so good and cheaper food)- but anywhere I can find cheap - we have stayed at Stay pineapple, pod hotel, 70 park . Summer is more expensive, but transportation is easy. We like to walk around the neighborhoods and explore the little parks and look at the buildings. Park Ave is closed on Sunday morning to traffic and super fun to walk on.

    This is a great list.

If you want more specific Broadway suggestions (rather than buying what's avail day of) then shout it out! There's lots of interesting stuff about to open this spring, so there should be some great options for summer. Of the current shows I'd say check tickets for The Outsiders (especially with a teen), Sunset Blvd, Gypsy, Maybe Happy Ending (this is the most charming show!) Oh Mary if it's still open (I haven't laughed that much in AGES) & The Great Gatsby (not perfect, but a gorgeous spectacle).

Oh Mary! is supposed to run through June 28th, so it may work for OP if they book their tix now.

I've heard good things about The Outsiders (my co-leader's daughter saw it last spring & loved it; the handful of songs from the cast album that I've heard have been wonderful ... the cast is spectacular!) and Maybe Happy Ending ... I just love Darren Criss.

I'm also really excited about John Proctor Is the Villain, but I don't know if it's supposed to be a limited run (opens March 20th) or if they're planning to run for a while. Either way, I kinda want to reread The Crucible, which means I have to figure out if I have my own copy.
