According TX DPS, you can only renew online every other time. Our state is the same - online is only available if your last renewal was in person. I think mainly they want an updated picture and eye test every so often.

NC is the same — online renewal only every other time. I don’t remember when online renewal started, but it sounds like we weren’t one of the early adopters (no big surprise).

We can renew online but have to go in for a new picture every time. I have never had my eyes checked again since I got my permit at age 15.5.
Used to be that AAA would do the photos for members but now everyone has to go to the DMV.

That is exactly what happened to me...AND I had my marriage license with me. My passport had expired so they wouldn't accept it. I had to get a new passport before I could get a RealID. It was a mess.

DH said it was so easy and he actually said to me "I don't see why you had any issues"... UGH

When it was DC's turn, we did the passport first. Even then I was pulling information from school and actually needed a letter from the Headmaster. We don't have printable report cards...

We drive from Michigan to New Hampshire yearly and it's much faster to go through Canada, so we all have enhanced. My licenses has a star to be a Real ID and a US flag for it to be enhanced.
oops I thought we could drive to Canada w/Real ID. How much more id could you get?? I had to have my birth cert, marriage lisc, ss card, 2 utility/ins/gov bills from last 6mo and my existing license.

I didn't think we had more than that. I don't think you can use the Real ID for the border but maybe?

When my kids got their enhanced licenses, the person authorized to do it came and quizzed them in their birth certificates. Where was their dad born, what is my maiden name, etc. It was hard! I'll. By the third I remembered to have him look it over before we went in

That must be it! I did my last in person in 2013 and now I just renewed for the next stretch. I guess it will be in person next time. The DMV is so hard! I?ve taken in a whole file folder full of things when my kids got their licenses. At least now we can book an appointment online, so it?s much faster.

Do you mean that your state only recognizes 1 legal middle name, even if a birth certificate has 2 middle names? It?s not uncommon for kids whose parents have different surnames to have a regular first name (e.g., Mary), a regular middle name (e.g., Ann), then parent #1's surname, and finally parent #2's surname. in the cases I’m familiar with, parent #2's surname is the one the kid uses as their surname, but this also recognizes the other parent. In your state, what would a kid like that have on their drivers license?

When I was younger, a lot of people gave their kids hyphenated surnames, but unless these were really short, it gave the DMV, doctors offices, schools etc nightmares because their systems couldn’t accommodate them and the records ended up with truncated names. I suspect that’s no longer such an issue.

I know in NC in the 90s, I was only allowed to have 1 middle name on my driver's license when I got married and friends with double middle names on their birth certificate had to choose one when we were all getting licenses. (Another friend who originally came from another state but updated her license in NC was forced to keep her maiden name as her middle name instead of choosing between them by the DMV, but I think that was just someone on a power trip.) I thought that was going to be an issue when I got my RealID since my Social Security Card has both my middle & maiden names listed as middle names as does my passport. Nope. No issue. But they still refused to put my middle name back on my ID. I was told I COULD have two last names separated by a space but no spaces allowed in the middle name section.
